Womack Methodist Church Cemetery

From Ste. Genevieve, take hwy 32 West (towards Farmington);
right after the I55 intersection, make a left on hwy B.  Follow B all the way to Coffman, when it changes, keep to the left on hwy WW.  Keep following WW until it deadends at hwy T, turn right on T.  This will take you into St. Francois Co and then back into Ste. Genevieve Co.  After you re-enter Ste. Genevieve Co, be looking for it on your right.  It is a small white church building with a sign (Womack Methodist Church) towards the road. (Or go to Farmington and then follow the directions below.)
From Farmington, take hwy OO South, turn left on hwy T.  Be looking for it on your left.

The following is additional info (not found in the cemetery itself) from Mort Womack and posted with permission:

As a child I visited Womack, MO with my father, and now some 50 years later, I looked on the internet and found your site. I really appreciate the work you must have done to have it available. The first 4 people below are my father’s great-grandparents. From my family records there are a few corrections and additions that I thought might be helpful…

– The McCarvers [Doctor O.H. and Mary A.] were married November 4th, 1845 — they had a daughter named Mary, who married William F. Womack
– the Womacks [Robert M. and Louisa] were married March 16th, 1852 — they had a son William F. who married the above Mary McCarver

– the four children buried together were the children of William F. Womack (b. 31 Dec. 1854, d. 6 Sept. 1934) and Mary I. Womack (b. 14 Feb. 1856, d. 3 March 1936). I do not know where they were buried. They were married 7 March 1878. Two of their children reached adulthood:

(1) Edna M. Womack (b. 14 Dec. 1881, d. 28 June 1975) — married ?? Merryman 26 Feb. 1905
(2) Theodre O. Womack (b. 13 June 1888, d. 3(05) Sept. 1953) — married Etta Ella Voelker (b. 23 June 1888, d. 16 Dec. 1952) Theodore and Ella are my paternal grandparents and were married 25 Sept. 1912.

Note: there is a photo of OH, his wife, and kids, donated by Jim McCarver on the Womack page.

Memorial Cemetery

383301448_2050df83bd_b

Memorial Cemetery is also sometimes called “Old Cemetery.” The gates to Memorial Cemetery are pictured here. The date on the middle column reads 1787. Memorial Cemetery was actually the second cemetery of Ste. Genevieve, (the first being washed out during the Flood of 1785) the land and provisions being granted by the Spanish.

380058984_c5673daafc_b 380567279_0843dd6473_b 380568699_2e1e3de661_b

The oldest existing tombstone is that of Louis LeClere in 1796, and the last burial was Odile Pratte Valle who was buried fifteen years after the cemetery was closed; when donating some land for a new cemetery, she was granted the burial spot next to her husband.

The “front” part of Memorial Cemetery, in the South (I call it the front because it is nearest the main gates) is mostly Catholic, the northeaster quarter was for Protestants, and the northwestern quarter was for the “Odd Fellows Lodge.”  The victims of the steam ship explosion on board the Doctor Franklin No 2. are buried in the Protestant section.  I have been told, however, that this area was once an Indian burial ground.  There are also a few common graves for epidemic victims (although I’m not sure where exactly).  It has been estimated that there are between 4,000 and 5,000 people buried in Memorial Cemetery (although some will more conservatively say 3,000).

This gates are accessible from 5th Street (E).  To the left of the cemetery is Market Street (S) and to the right is Jefferson Street (N).  Bordering the back (W) of the cemetery is a residential area and Basler Funeral Home (NW).  The other entrance to the cemetery is located by the funeral home, a single gate.

Transcription as found on papers in the Ste. Genevieve County Library (no transcriber info was found).

This transcription is done in order of a cemetery walk through – it is not alphabetized, I am typing it as it is written. Images were taken by myself in January, 2007. Note that this cemetery does not yet have images of each and every single stone and some photos may overlap some stones but the image will only be shown next to the prominent stones.
