Is registration required for any part of this site? Registration is not required for any of the records on stegenevieve.net. The purpose of stegenevieve.net is to make it possible for those who cannot visit to still be able to get some quality resources and information. We are expanding all the time and there are no plans to make this a must-register site or a paid site. However, registration is required for the following things: to post messages to the message board or to submit links to the links section, or to submit any type of larger resource (census records, cemetery transcriptions, etc.) Wait - I have to register to submit information? Larger pieces of information and resources, yes. The theory behind this is that everyone can then edit their own submissions if needed and due credit given to the right people. However, resources can always be emailed to me and I will add them. If you're confused about adding to the site, I can always add the information and have it display you as the author. Aren't you afraid of spam? I am! Yes, I HATE spam with a passion! You will not get any spam from this website. Your email address is not shared with anyone, sold to any companies, etc. Your privacy is respected. Your email is not even listed for other members to see. This, of course, all assumes that you have not posted your email yourself. If you post your email in the message boards, it can be seen by anyone and possibly picked up by spambots. If you are in fear of spam, the best thing to do is require people to reply to your message board posts to get in touch with you or to post your email address in a less-than-recognizable way to bots such as: myemail at thisdomain dot net or
This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it
, etc. However, the new version of the program that runs this site now protects email addresses that are posted within normal articles. So even though you and I see the email address normally, spam bots do not and they cannot harvest it for spam. This applies to articles and submissions and the like, not the message boards, however. Why do I have to register to post to the message boards? For two reasons: 1. So that you can opt to get automated emails when someone replies to one of your messages (see the message board help section for more info). 2. At the old boards, I had too many people that would post without being registered - and while this in itself wasn't a problem, it would often happen that they would post as "Anonymous" (because they weren't registered) and would forget to leave any contact information so that when someone replied, they weren't notified and none of us had any way of contacting them with any information. Requiring registration solves most of that problem.
Why must I verify my email address with the site before I can log in? This is just to protect the site owner and members from spammers who might sign up with a fake email address only to post links to their spam sites, etc. All you need to do after registering is locate the email that was sent to you and click on the link in it. This just proves to the site that your email address is valid (that you are a real person) and it will automatically activate you and allow you to login.
But I did not get an verification email, what's wrong? There are a number of reasons for this. You may have accidentally entered your email address incorrectly or your spam filter could have eaten it. If think you might have an over-active spam filter, before registering, be sure to add the addresses from stegenevieve.net to your allow list. If you've already registered and have not received your email after a few days, please email the beforementioned address, or click the contact us link on the menu. Let me know the email address you signed up with, your username/name and I will activate your account for you. Note: as an extra precaution against spammers and hackers, unactivated accounts will automatically be deleted after a reasonable amount of time. If you believe your account was deleted, please register again (and I am sorry for any inconvenience). If when registering, you receive an error that the email address is already in use on the site, your account was not removed. Please contact the webmaster.
