Welcome to our Burtcher page. This includes all spellings of the surname.
BURCHER, BUTCHER, BURTSCHER...

We are also known as "The Burtcher Resource Center"

The earliest Burtcher's we have are Michael and Margaret (Hayden) Burtcher. Michael, along with his brothers Sebastian and Bartholomew came to Ste. Genevieve County, Mo in 1797 and were stonemasons. Bartholomew was married to Elizabeth Bloom, sister of Peter Bloom who was born in Md. Elizabeth died Aug 1797 in Ste. Genevieve and Bartholomew died 24 Jul 1802 at Mine la Motte in Ste. Gen. County. He was listed as being about 30 and German. They are both buried in Memorial Cemetery in Ste. Genevieve. The Burtcher (aka as Butcher) brothers were stonemasons and are known to have built homes and buildings in Ste. Genevieve and did much work in the area on fireplaces, hearths, retaining walls and more. It is possible they also did simular work elsewhere before coming to Ste. Genevieve. We know from records that Michael did work on Pierre Menard's home in Kaskaskia, IL.

What is new at our site?? In August of 2000 we took a trip to Ste. Genevieve for two days and can't wait to go back! We were able to get additional papers on our ancestors including a store log for Michael in 1818-1819. In Chester, Randolph Co, Ill we were able the pick up Michael's probate that a very nice lady at the RCGC had found for us in advance and had waiting for us! His inventory tells who purchased his property and is an interesting read. While in Ste. Genevieve we spoke with Jim Baker that helps to restore and research the old buildings and he gave us a list of early deeds concerning Butchers. Please come back often to see what we have added!!

Traveling back in time to the old home place,
Looking back now, as tears fall on my face.
A sadness forms from deep within,
While remembering back to the days back then...
