Family of John Dodge - 2006/09/18 11:44 I am trying to trace a very early New Bourbon/Ste. Genevieve settler, John Dodge. Here is what I have:

He was a wild one, and has been termed variously, "an adventurer, robber, bandit, man of no religion." Many records confirm he was from Connecticut in the line of Tristram Dodge (see the Dodge Family Association web site). He was the brother of Israel Dodge, the uncle of Henry Dodge, and possibly my ancestor.

Possible wife's names: Marianne, Marguerite, Anne.
Possible children (from the Church of Ste. Genevieve records put on the web by Lise Buese): Mary/Marie (Both names are given as marrying into the Deguire family), Thomas (who may be the same Thomas Dodge who appears as an early resident of Saline), John/Jean, Marguerite, Isreal Genereux/Genereaux, and Theodosia. (I am particularly interested in ANY record on Isreal Genereux.)

Many sources state that he died in Ste. Genevieve around 1795.
One source, which I cannot now find, says that he started the salt works in Saline. Another (also lost in my files) said he was the first sheriff, before his nephew, Henry Dodge.

Is anyone researching this family? I live in Brazil and can work only via the internet and would be extremely grateful for any informaiton.
Thank you.
Anne
