Govro and Williams in Ste. Genevieve - 2006/01/24 19:51 Is anyone here researching the Henri Govro family. Henri's daughter, Marie, married Harmon Williams in 1839 in Ste. Gen. This line of Govro (Govreau) was related to Caron, and Thomure names in the River Aux Vases area.
Harmon and Marie (Mary/Margaret) had the following children: Guilliame (William), Noah, George, James, John, Charles, Joseph, Mary, Herman and Alexander (Alixander). I'd love to discuss this family with anyone who is researching it. I have a lot of information that I collected in Salt Lake City this past fall. Please email me or post here.

Re:Govro and Williams in Ste. Genevieve - 2006/01/25 22:49 Hello cousin,

I read with great interest your information regarding the Henri Govreau family. He is my gggggrandfather. I have been researching the Govreau family for about 5 years now and I have acquired a great deal of information. As you may already know, Henri Govreau married Marie Louise Carron and had at least 8 children of which one was your Marie and one was my Henri. My Henri Govreau b. 1816, married Mary Ida Unterreiner (Mary Ida is someone I have been trying to track down for about four years). This Henri and Mary Ida Govreau had a daughter, Mary Ann Govreau who married Augustus Govreau, son of Francois Felix Govreau and Marie Louise Aubuchon (I have two lines of Govreaus that come together as one at this point). Mary Ann and Augustus had a son, Charles Lawrence Govreau and he married Alice Margaret Hopkins of St. Francois County, Mo. Charles and Alice Govreau had a daughter, Annie Gertrude Govreau who was my grandmother.

I have your Marie Govreau as Marie Marguerite Govreau b. 14 Nov., 1817, and that she married Herman (or Harmon) Williams, son of Abraham Williams and Sallie Unknown. The source for this marriage is the Govreau book printed by the Chamber of Commerce, Project Pioneers, Ste. Genevieve, Mo.

Your Marie Govreau was a sister to my ancestor, Henri Govreau. I would be very interested in any additional information that you may have and I would of course share whatever I have. Looking forward to hearing from you.

Re:Govro and Williams in Ste. Genevieve - 2006/01/26 14:31 Karen, I'm delighted that you responded to my post. I am on a fishing expedition for the family of Harmon (Herman) Williams to see if this is the family that my great grandfather was descended. I recently went to Salt Lake City to do some research and found quite a bit in the records for this family. I was able to find the original marriage record for Harmon and Marie but haven't been able to find their death records.
I can post the information that I have here or you can email me and we can swap what we know. I'll be happy to send you the scanned records that I've found. Unfortunately, I don't have much information on the Govreau line except how they are connect to Harmon Williams. I recently found a very interesting file of genealogy that has the Williams/Govro/Thomure and other lines peppered throughout. It is from the River Aux Vases area and is school records that list students, parents and tax payers from this area. I believe the Williams to be Harmon's children and grandchildren.
Anyway, let me know which you prefer-my email is

Re:Govro and Williams in Ste. Genevieve - 2006/01/28 18:21 Hello Cousin,

Like Karen I am a descendent of Henri Govreau b:1816 but I connect through his son Charles Joseph Govreau b:12/9/1852. My grandmother was Charles' daughter Thresa Josephine Govreau who married Stanley Rodger Resinger on 1/2/1919. They had a daughter Dorothy Ludora Resinger who is my mother.

I have been researching the Govreaus with all of its different spellings for about 3 1/2 years and have gathered quite a bit of information which I will happily share. Also, I am always looking for more data to add to my family tree. If you have any information that you would be willing to share, please email me at wblumenb@swbell.net.

What does everyone know about the ancestry of Henri & Louis? Is what I have so far correct?

Re:Govro and Williams in Ste. Genevieve - 2006/02/03 14:01 I have this information about Etienne Gouvereau from the Kaskaskia marriages:
Gouvereau, Etienne to Marie Louise Quesnel on 12 Jan 1750

Gouvereau, Etieene, widow(er) of Marie Louise Quesnel to Angelique Perthius, widow of Louis Chauvin on 17 Mar 1755.

1850 Fed census for Ste. Genevieve:

Govro, Etienne age 41, farmer b. Missouri
Mary age 29 , wife, b. Tn
Mary L, age 19 b. MO
Henry G. age 17, b. MO
John C., age 15, b. MO
Elizabeth, age 13, b. MO
Elic, age 11 b. MO
Julia, age 9, b. MO
Ellen, age 7, b. MO
John, age 3, b. MO
Mercelile, age 1 b. MO
Felix, age 5 mos, b. MO

My Mary Govro who married Harmon Williams was the daughter of Henry Govro and Marie Louise Caron. Does anyone know who this Henry's father was. He and Marie were married in 1839 so he is not the Henry listed above.

Re:Govro and Williams in Ste. Genevieve - 2006/02/05 12:02 Hi Kay,
It's been a while, hasn't it? How have you been?

You asked about my genealogy, and yes I do have a lot on all of our family names. It might be easier if you asked me for specific information rather than me sending all I have. That would be a huge chore. What are you specifically looking for?

Re:Govro and Williams in Ste. Genevieve - 2006/02/07 10:00 Valerine,
I've created a database for the Govro line in order to separate the different families. I am still not clear who is the father of Henry Govro who married Marie Louise Caron. When I get it finished, hopefully this week, I'll send you a Gedcom file and if you don't mind you can look it over to see how it fits with your information.

Re:Govro and Williams in Ste. Genevieve - 2006/02/08 14:34 Valerie,
Here is some of the information I found online on the LDS website (note that I do not know what all sources are for the information):

Etienne Govereau b. 1683 La Roche sur Yon, Vendee, France; d. 19 Nov 1765, Quebec, Canada. Etienne came to Canada after the turn of the century as a soldier for the King of France. After 3 years service he remained in Canada and lived in the "high village" of Quebec. His occupation was "Tanneur and Corroyeur" or tanner and leather dresser.

Etienne stayed in Quebec after his son Etenne Adrian had moved on to the Le Pays de Illinois or the Illinois Country.

His father was Pierre Govereau, b. abt 1655 in La Roche Sur Yon, Vendee France, mother D'Anne Arrive b. abt 1660 in La Roche Sur Yon, Vendee, France.
He married Marguerite Francoise Legris b. 20 Mar 1690/91 in Quebec on 27 Jun, 1712 in Quebec. Their children are Etienne Adrian, Pierre, Marie Marguerite, Jacques Alexis, Claude, Etienne, Jean Baptiste, Nicolas, Joseph, Marie Ann, Madeleine, Angelique and Marie Josette. This information is taken from Dictionaire Genealogiique des Families du Quebec, page 482, René Jette, 1983.

Etienne Adrian was born 13 Apr 1713 in Quebec, Canada. He married Marie Ann Millet, b. 1714 in Kaskaskia, IL. Their son, Etienne was bon abt 1736 in Kaskaskia and died 15 Aug, 1781 in Ste. Genevieve,
According to one family record he was married first to Marie Louise Quesniel on 12 Jan 1750/51, then secondly to Angelique Perthuis on 17 Mar 1755.
He then married Marie Jeanne Saucier dit LaValle (b 1742 in Beauport, Canada) on 24 May, 1762, in Kaskaskia, Illinois. Their children were Etienne, Jean Baptiste, Joseph, Antoine,Michel, Henri, and Pierre.

Henri Govereau b. 08 Dec 1777, Sainte Genevieve
married, 28 Jan 1800, death 26 Aug 1843. Henri was married to Anchange Courtois. His second marriage was to Marie Louise Caron, b. 2 Oct, 1779 in Old French, Ste. Genevieve on 5 Nov, 1805. Their children were Eulalie, Etienne, Caroline, Louis, Jean Baptiste, Henri, Marie Marguerite b. Nov 1817, and Pelagie.

Marie Louise Caron was the daughter of Louis Caron, b. abt 1756, Kaskaskia, burial 15 Jun, 1825 in Ste. Gen. There is a Caron webpage online that lists Louis as the son of Claude Caron.

Marie Marguerite Govereau married Harmon Williams in 1839 in Ste Gen. This is the line that I am researching.

Hopefully Karen or Wayne can make any corrections to the above research. I have not verified it and suspect that it is not entirely accurate.
