Old Stone Cemetery
Old Stone Cemetery

When I first tried to visit this cemetery in October of 2002, there were no trespassing signs and the gate was padlocked. Sometime later, Audrey Steffe send me some photos she had taken in the cemetery around August 2002, she said that the gate was not padlocked at that time. I visited this cemetery again, sometime in 2004, and the gate was not padlocked and I went in and took some overall shots. There was, however, still a no trespassing sign on the gate. I last visited September 29, 2006 and found the same no trespassing sign but the gate was not padlocked. Now that I know Missouri cemetery laws, I went in, equipped with my digital camera, with the purpose of getting a photo of every stone and completing the transcription for this website. It is legal to visit this cemetery, no matter what the signs may say, provided you are visiting for a valid reason, ie., you’re not there just to cause trouble. This cemetery is not landlocked, you do not have to cross any private property to get to it, there is a gravel road leading right to it.  So please feel free to visit this cemetery, just remember to respect it!

Photos at the bottom of this page as well as the photo of the sign immediately below are courtesy of Audrey Steffee (ABBAHORSE at aol.com) and are much appreciated – thank you! If a stone has another photo (submitted by Audrey) it will have an asterisk and the photo will be at the bottom of the page. Click the thumbnail to view a larger photo.

Overall Photos:

This transcription has now been done by myself from the photos I took in September of 2006. It has been done to the best of my knowledge and is up-to-date as of September 29, 2006. Below the transcription from the stones, you will find a few more names that I have seen on other transcriptions or that people have given me that I do not have photos of their stones. It is possible that the stones are now destroyed as there are several torn-up and/or unreadable ones in this cemetery.

NOTE: this is one that I do not have a photo of. This photo was submitted by Audrey. I am not sure if I just missed this stone somehow, though I checked three times, or if it’s one of the now completely destroyed stones you will find towards the bottom of this page.

The following individual is in the cemetery but the stone no longer exists.  See source info.

Cheesbrough, Thomas D.; July 10, 1840 – Jan 24, 1921.
Source: Missouri Death certificate #1925 (burial on 1-25-1921) by way of Audrey Steffee.  (This Thomas is the son of the Thomas Cheesbrough already listed in this cemetery.)

The following individuals have been said to be in this cemetery but I did not find any stones for them when I visited in September 2006. It is very possible that they belong to one of the destroyed stones (see below). The next time I get a chance I will check again for these names and if I find them they’ll be added to the regular list with photos, or if someone can provide me with a photo of their stone or other valid source of information such as death certificate or church record that shows burial in this cemetery.

Eades, Martha

The following are broken/unreadable stones captured September 29, 2006:

NOTE: if you are looking for more information on any of these families, please try viewing this 1999 transcription. This transcription is missing a few individuals but it has some information regarding who married who and who was related to who, etc.
