Ellen M. Ryan, who holds an MA in History from Southeast Missouri State University, is Digital Project Manager with Special Collections and Archives located at Kent Library on the campus of the University. Her presentation on April 25th 2012 will provide information on a survey of original source materials from the Civil War now being conducted throughout twenty-eight counties of Southeast Missouri, including the Mineral Area.

The project is a collaborative effort between Kent Library’s Special Collections, the Center for Regional History and the Department of History at Southeast Missouri State University, the Cape Girardeau County Archives Center and the Special Collections Research Center at Southern Illinois-Carbondale. Their goal is to identify original letters, journals, diaries, photographs, documents and other paper items from the period of approximately 1854-1874, with emphasis on the Civil War period of 1861-1865. Staff working on this project have been in regular communication with libraries, museums, archives, genealogical societies and individuals to pull out items which will explain all areas (military, political, economic, social) of this exciting period of American history. For more information on the survey, or if interested in contributing, please join us on Wednesday April 25 at 7:00 pm. More information is available by contacting Bob Schmidt at (573) 358-7946.
