Another fire scare stirred up Ste. Genevieve last
Sunday morning about 3:30 o’clock. At that time Frank Geiler
happened to be out of bed and noticed a smoke at the convent.
He called his brother Will and after putting on their clothes Frank
started down the street to give the alarm, while Will ran over to
the convent. He found a box on the ground floor of the back
porch in which ashes has been put which had burnt through the floor
and set the firewood stored under it ablaze. A few buckets of
water put the fire out before it had time to spread.
75 Years Ago – 1927
Friday afternoon of last week fire caused by spontaneous combustion
started in a coal bin containing several tons of coal at the Western
Lime Works in Ste. Genevieve and before it could be extinguished the
flames burned a large hole in a side wall and the roof of the shed.
An alarm was sent but prompt action on the part of men who happened
to be nearby prevented the fire from spreading and it was
extinguished by the use of buckets of water.
